Course Description:

This course is designed to provide patrol supervisors and OIC’s with the information and tools needed to manage a critical incident prior to the arrival of SWAT. Understanding the methodology used in by tactical team leaders in determining a response and how to prepare for a response. As part of this course students will participate in tabletop exercises and work through possible issues that arise which will give the patrol supervisor the tools needed to succeed during these events.

Instructor:

Detective Sergeant Scott van Raalten has been with the Hopkinton Police Department since July 2001. He holds a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University, Master degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Western New England University, and a Juris Doctorate from Massachusetts School of Law. He is a member of the Massachusetts Bar and has been accepted to practice in the 1st US District Court. He currently oversees the Detective Bureau, School Resource Officer program, and serves as the Court Prosecutor for the department. His duties include management and oversight of all property, evidence, and firearms. He has worked for the Massachusetts Police Training Council as a Drill instructor for the Boylston and Fitchburg Police Academies and has taught Firearms, Courtroom Procedure, First Line Supervisor, and Legal Updates. During his career with the Hopkinton Police he has been assigned to the Boat Unit, Motorcycle Unit, and CEMLEC SWAT team. Throughout his career he has always had a strong interest in the law and tactical training. With his training and experience from SWAT he has prepared an active attacker program which he has delivered to business, religious organizations, and town employees.
